Detained at Strangeways during his trial, Dale Cregan was found guilty of four murders and three attempted murders on the 13 th June and sentenced to life imprisonment. Just 19 at the time, he was arrested and charged for fraudulent trading with a mail-order company, buying goods on credit, selling them at a slight loss and then recycling the money back into his business to gain a better credit rating. Notorious for being one of the main ringleaders of the huge day Strangeways riot in where prisoners famously ended up on the roof of the prison.

A series of riots plagued the prison between April 1 and April 25 and around staff and 47 prisoners were injured. Concerns about the conditions within the prison and the fact prisoners felt their complaints were not being heard is believed to have sparked the riot - which began at the prison chapel.
