Covering acres, it's bigger than Disneyland, and serves a number of roles. As an event center, it hosts weddings, bar mitzvahs, company picnics, conferences, seminars, workshops - that sort of thing. But it also contains a restaurant called the Malibu Cafe , which is open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 12 noon - 12 midnight , and that might afford you a chance to wander over and see the "Bunheads" locations.
But since I haven't been there in person, I can't say for sure. Also on the property is the "The Biggest Loser Resort" they apparently film that reality show here at the ranch , as well as a summer camp for kids called "Camp Summertime", and "Milestones Ranch", an adult rehab center.
Here is the official Calamigos Ranch website. But if you're not in the mood to scale the hills of Malibu , don't despair. They have also filmed at several other locations. In the pilot episode, Michelle visits " Sparkles ", a dress store that she discovers is owned by her husband's old girlfriend Truly Stone.
The store is on the north side of the street, 7 or 8 blocks inland from the Hermosa Pier. In the current Google StreetView , the storefront houses Maximus hair salon.
However, in Episode 16, they threw this new schoo l exter ior at us: That is not LeConte. In the screencap above, we are looking west, at i ts east side, which faces in towards the athl etic field rather than towards the street.
In the 5th episode, Boo goes to work at the Oyster Bar , a cafe which becomes a regular location, where the girls often meet up. That scene was shot in the very same restaurant that used to be the " Crashdown Cafe " in the TV series " Roswell ".
It's located at N. Citrus Avenue , in Covina , CA. How do I know? In that 5th episode scene, as the girls are being seated, you can see out the windows and can read the signs on the businesses across the street. That view includes Joslin's Bakery at N. If you've been following the show, you may have noticed that Paradise, the fictional town where the show is set, looks familiar.
That's because much of it is shot in and around Calamigos Ranch, located on the border of Agoura Hills and Malibu. Throughout the season, the writers have toyed with the location of Paradise, making tongue and cheek references to real locations along the southern California coast.
For example, in the fourth episode of Season 1, Fanny, lead character Michelle's mother-in-law, makes a tongue-in-cheek remark about Oxnard. Fanny: Best view of Oxnard is in the rear view mirror. Michelle: You should Tweet that. Fanny: I don't do that. Michelle: Me neither. Tropia said that the crew and writers had such a good experience when they filmed parts of the pilot on location there, they decided to use the ranch as one of the show's primary locales.
Michelle's cottage is one of the many sets filmed at the Ranch. Tropia said that the versatility of the area allowed the crew to create much of the fictional town there. They have ponds, various buildings, woods, a lake," said Tropia. In the show, the estate Michelle lives on not only has a primary house, a dance studio and a cottage, but also bodies of water, as referenced in the third episode.
Savage, a fan of the show himself, said that it is great to have the production based at the Ranch. Savage said he is thrilled that Calamigos Ranch works for the fictional beachside community of Paradise. Bunheads was just picked up for more episodes to run this winter.
